Proposal- SNE

Album covers I get inspiration/ideas from

 Drake- Nothing was the same

 Meek Mill- Dream Chasers3

Wretch 32- Black and White

Discussions with my artist- SNE

We had a brief meeting and planned bits and bobs

Locations: We planned to have the video shoot at 3 different locations. Each location represented the artist and had a meaning.

Location 1: Artists recording studio- This location was chosen because myself and the artist believed that it would make the video have a more natural look, as he can use it as a studio session but I will be recording it as part of the music video.

Location 2:The studio- We chose this because we believed that the plain background of the studio will look good with the whole concept of the music video.

Location3: The third location was in a block of flats which had the perfect view when dark. We wanted to use this location for the ending of the music video, to wrap up the whole music video.

  • We also used some other areas, but that wasn't any main parts, it was only used to do cutaways

Mise En Scene:
  • We decided that we only wanted other characters in one of the scene but only to use as a cutaway. We wanted to just focus on the artist so we chose not to have anyone else in it.
  • Clothing- We also decided that the artist should wear plain colours such as black and white apart from the scene where he is in his own studio.

Motivation

Change of plans

Plans never went accordingly with my partner so we decided to go our separate ways and work individually. Because this was the case, I decided that my idea was too ambitious and a lot of work for only one person to handle, so I decided to change my plan of a party based music video, to a music video of just one person and just focusing on them and their lyrics.

The artist was going to be: SNE
Genre: Hiphop/Rap
Song- Self Portrait
About the song: The song talks about the things that he has been through in his life and all the obstacles he has had to face in order to get to where he is today.

case study music vid 2

Themes & Motif: The main theme/motif of the song is money & wealth & assets. This all correlates with the title of the song 'imma boss'. This is because, as a boss your expected to have the the money, popularity, flashy cars, jewelry etc, and in this music video, he is basically just saying not only is he a boss because of all of this that he has, but also because he is currently dominating in the rap music industry and is also signed to the big boss himself 'Rick Ross' music label. The music label is called Maybach music group, which is associated with one of the major record companies Warner music group.

Camera angles, special effects, mise en scene : The only special effects used in the music video was flashing lights which was used to add affect to the music video and keep the audience engaged. Meek Mill- He is dressed in very plain simple clothing, yet has very big and bold jewels on. Big gold chains and very distinctive expensive rings on. Also in the music video he is riding on expensive bikes. This just goes to show that although you have the money, you do not have to dress in flashy clothing. The jewelry does all the talking. Rick Ross- He is also dressed very similar to Meek Mill. The area the video is shot in is Philadelphia in america. This is known to be one of the poorest areas in america, however, 2 of the most successful rappers are shooting the video in the neighborhood. The neighborhood looks dull and undeveloped, however this does not remove any seriousness of the video or the lyrics, just comes to show that you can be from a poor neighborhood and still make it into a 'boss'. Telling all the audience to believe it!
There was not much special effects used in this music video, the most common ones which were used in the music video, were the flashing of the music video, and the slow motion effects. These were used to keep the audience captivated and interested.

Audience: The audience to this music video is mostly young people, especially those who are already in the music industry and are looking to make it big one day and hopefully release a similar track stating the things they have accomplished. Audiences of this music video can also be fans of the entire music label MMG (Maybach music group), This is because both artists are from the same music group, especially with Rick Ross being the founder and creator of the music group, this can help attract more audiences. If you was to explore this even deeper, the audience could also be other artists who are signed to Warner bros as they have an association with this music label.

Idea's I can take for my own music video: The idea's that I can take from this music video and have in my own one is first of all the concept. My music video could also be about 1 or 2 artists who have made it in the music industry and are now celebrating or 'boasting' to the world about the things they have. One thing that i would also like to take for my music video is the type of editing techniques that were used in this video, thats because i believe that the editing techniques that were used, purposely kept the audiences engaged.

Media case study-
Rick Ross ft. Meek Mill- Imma boss
Genre- Rap/Hip-hop
Performance based: This music video is performance based because the concept of the video is not story like. It is more performance based by the types of scenes that have been included and shot in the video. Their main location for the music video is their neighborhood. I know this because of the lyrics which are used in the video. The main purpose to why this video was shot in their neighborhood was to show fellow artists and supporters that, even though they have made it and are dominating the music industry, they will not forget their roots and where they came from and with their success, they are willing to give back to the community.
Themes& motifs- The main theme behind the music is for the 2 artists rick Ross and meek mill to show to everyone that they are the 'boss' in other words, the ones that are in control. They give themselves the title of boss and present themselves as the dominating pair. What supports the title of them being a boss is their lyrics and them boasting/ showing off the assets they own, how 'healthy' their bank account is and the amount of female they both have.
In this music video, because it’s about them claiming to be authority and in a high position, the role they play in the music video has to be major. Not only do they stand out, but they keep reminding the audience they are a boss. Imma boss- starts off by promoting the new album, by doing this, those who like the song would automatically assume that the rest of the album should be up to the same standard and that would lead to them to invest in the album.
They then write their record label and the font starts from small and gradually turns big.
A lot of shot reverse shot to show the conversation between the 2artists. The scene flashes as one of the editing techniques. Also a lot of tracking is being used in the music video. These camera movements help attract the audience and also helps us follow the action and feel engaged with the music video.
A lot of cutting as it is showing different views of the city and the people who live within the area.
Flashing lights are also used to go with the beat of the song
Bright contrast at the end of the video
Lip syncing- The way the lip synch is done to a high standard. Their body language and the action of their arms are moving so well and accordingly so you won't even be able to tell that they are lip synching.
Target audience- The target audience are girls and boys aged 15+ and also just normal rap/Hip-hop lovers. I believe that it is mainly targeted to rival artists, showing that they are the ones who are in control and are dominant.
Camera angles, special effects, mise en scene and editing techniques.
Special affects- flashing lights, slow motion
Mise en scene- the area is a normal neighborhood is America. All the people in the music video including the 2 artists are dressed in casual clothing but have flashy clothing. I believe that the artists are dressed in casual clothing because their assets basically represent them, so there is no need for the to dress over the top or in incredibly fashionable clothing because they are already known to be successful.
'Bitch imma boss'- them saying this is basically saying to all the artists that they are superior and are on top of all of them, and they are better than them lyrically & physically.
The target audience are encouraged to buy this record because as the artists are selling to them that try are the best, the consumers would want to purchase something that they think is made from the best so they are automatically encouraged to buy it. They are also encouraged to buy the record by the type of lyrics. If they believe that the lyrics from the artists relate to them or their situation then they are most likely to support and buy the record.
What ideas could you take from the video: the ideas which I would want to take from the video mainly is the concept and the performance of the music video? The reason being is because my music video is of the same genre and the song is pretty similar so, if I was to use ideas from this music video and generate it to my own, also having similar mise en scene, my video can come out high quality/ good standard.
One other idea that I can take from the music video is the scene which looks like a party/celebration. The reason to why I would want to take this idea and use it for my music video is because, my music video is inspired by this video and is also of a similar genre and concept. I also believe that this idea would work really well with my music video because of the type of beat & lyrics that I’m going to be using.
